HIMS  Health Information Specialist (HIS)

Occupational Summary

The HIS is involved in maintaining medical records to include filing, retrieving, scanning, and distributing medical records, loose reports, and maintaining associated logs and records in accordance with established priorities and procedures. Receives, validates, and handles requests for health information. Performs a variety of clerical duties including greeting customers, answering departmental telephones, handles facsimiles, etc.

Qualifications

Excellent interpersonal and customer services skills, ability to communicate with all levels of staff and patients. Computer skills (Microsoft Office Products); ability to maintain confidentiality and release of information policies; attention to detail is a must and the ability to type 45 wpm; excellent verbal and written communication skills; some knowledge of medical terminology.

Education

High School graduate or GED equivalent, supplemented by college business classes; Associates degree in Health Information Management or related field preferred.

One to three years of clerical/receptionist experience. Previous Health Information Services (Medical Records) experience in Release of Information preferred.

Bilingual (English/Spanish) – read, write, speak, comprehension of both English and Spanish Preferred.
